There's a lot of buzz about shockwave therapy. What is it, and can it help you?

If you don't yet know about it, or are confused about the options, this is a short guide for you.

There are two types of shockwave therapy: Radial Pressure Wave and Focus Wave. At CT Sports Recovery, we use the latest technology in shockwave therapy, created by Storz. Rest assured that this technology is safe and effective, with zero radiation or chemical exposure. Unfortunately insurance does not cover these treatments, as determined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Our shockwave protocol for pain employs a combination of Radial Pressure Wave and Focus Wave therapy.

Radial Pressure Wave Therapy sends high energy acoustic (sound) waves through the device to help reduce muscle pain and promote healing without surgery or medications. This type of application is best used in areas with generalized soreness in muscles or tendons. Utilizing this therapy, inflammation and the resulting pain will be reduced by increasing blood flow to the area, decreasing scar tissue, breaking up calcifications in tendons, and triggering new healthy bone growth.

Focus Shockwave Therapy uses electroacoustic technology to penetrate deeper into the tissue, applying a lens to focus the pulsed energy into a point to create a stronger stimulus. This is best for targeted pain therapy, and is the better option for deeper pain. It is becoming a gold standard for deep tendon pain, calcifications, and delayed bone healing such as in avascular necrosis of the hip, tibial stress fractures, and more.

This application costs $200 per session per area (one shoulder, one Achilles tendon, etc) for one treatment area. A full treatment course is 3 applications ($600) which can be done 1-2 times per week. For two treatment areas, the cost is $300 per session, or $900 for a full course. Additional sessions can be applied if the goal of treatment is not achieved.

Both of these technologies induce new blood flow to bring healing growth factors to the area, which in turn promotes new blood vessel growth and new tissue growth. Expect both types of treatments to temporarily increase the pain you're feeling because of inflammation in the area. The goal of treatment is to get your pain to at least 50% of what it was before you started.

There is a period of restructuring that takes 1-3 months after your last treatment, so while you may continue to have pain after the last treatment, over time your condition should gradually improve. Keep in mind that no treatment is 100% effective, and while most patients are helped with these new therapies, there is a small possibility that you may not be satisfied with the results.

We do offer insurance based treatments such as Osteopathic Manipulation. If you'd like to explore what we have to offer before committing to a treatment, please call or text to see what is recommended. We promise to listen, and respect the journey that brought you to us. If you would like to book an evaluation first, we will assess you and then recommend the proper course of treatment. Most times, we can do the first treatment at that visit.
