Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as #IBS, is a chronic functional gut-brain disorder that affects around 1 out of 10 people. This common disorder of the stomach and intestines can present with gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. The difficult side of IBS is that patients can end up going through a huge workup and treatment is at times unsatisfactory and doesn't always fully resolve the symptoms, OR the medications used to treat the symptoms can come along with their own undesirable side effects. It is a long-lasting issue that can take over your life if you let it.
The good news for those that suffer with this condition is that gentle hands-on techniques can alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and help return IBS sufferers to a normal life. In an analysis of five different studies from Italian and American institutions, osteopathic manipulation techniques were found to be better than no intervention and at least equal to the standard medication based treatments. It's important to mention that osteopathic manipulation does not carry any side effects and is completely safe. Another randomized study analyzed how long this treatment can last, and found that patients have significantly less symptoms at one year after treatment compared to when the patients were first interviewed.
The protocol for treatment in our clinic is a reset of the parasympathetic nervous system at the base of the skull and the sacrum, accompanied by a balance of the sympathetic nervous system by gentle manipulation of the thoracic spine and rib cage. The treatment is completed by abdominal manipulation to release the attachments of the gut to the connective tissue by performing what's called a mesenteric, or gut, release, and adding on inhibition of the nerve bundles that go to the stomach, small bowel, and large bowel. This treatment takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
